...Peakovic

Posted by: George Peakovic on October 12, 2002 - Peakovic family history

Name 1: Peakovic
Name 2: Jandric
Location: Stara Gradiska

I am trying to trace my family. My father Petar Peakovic was born in Stara Gradiska June 18, 1892 and baptized at Gornji Varos church. His parents were Mato and Janja. Janja was a Jandric.

I do not know his grandfather's name. His great-grandfather was a Marko Peakovic also from Stara Gradiska. I would like to find out who his grandfather was and how many children he had. I would also like to know more about his great-grandfather, how many children he had, and more about Marko's ancestors.

I have also been told that the Peakovic's are related to the Pejakovic's, the Matokovic's and the Pejacevic's from whom we are supposedly descended.

In my searching I have found a lot of people who's last name ends in either (kovic) or (ovic). I would like to know more about how and where that ending on the surname came to be. I feel that somewhere way back in time there is an explanation that will answer my question.

Also, I have heard stories that during the Austro-Hungarian empire one of the Pejacevic sons committed a crime of some sort and was jailed in Stara Gradiska. When he was released from jail, his parents being of nobility disowned him. He in turn changed his name to Peakovic.
If this is a true story, was he the first Peakovic or did the name already exist?

I will greatly appreciate any and all information I can get regarding the above.
thank you very much
George M Peakovic

When researching your ancestors in Croatia, it is important to remember that the country is divided into "Zupanija(s)" / provinces, and the main town of each county, as well as the nearest church, is likely to hold most of the records.

Gornji Varos and Stara Gradiska are both in the Brodsko-posavska zupanija, the main town of which is Slavonski Brod.

Thus you might want to start your research with the state archives in Slavonski Brod:-
Drzavni arhiv Slavonski Brod
A. Cesarca 1; 35 000 Slavonski Brod; Croatia
tel & fax +385 (0)35 446-573
e-mail: drzavni-arhiv-sb@sb.tel.hr

The institution itself was established in 1959, but is responsible for archiving records covering the period between 1724 and 1990, for both of the two neighbouring provinces;
Brodsko-posavska and Pozesko-slavonska

Another source of information could be the Socio-economic Department of Slavonski Brod:-
Zupanijska Komora Slavonski Brod
Trg pobjede 31; 35000 Slavonski Brod; Croatia
tel +385 (0)35 448 583; fax +385 (0)35 448 591
e-mail: hgksb@hgk.hr

Also, it might be worth contacting the Public Department for Cultural Development:-
Upravni odjel za drustvene djelatnosti
Procelnik: Slava Jurisic
tel +385 (0)35 448-806
e-mail: gu_drustvene@sb.hinet.hr

And then, there are a few "Peakovic"s still living in Gornji Varos, some of whom might be directly related to you (?), and could perchance even give you some personal information

Peakovic Dragutin Gornji Varos 66 +385 (0)35 374 208
Peakovic Ivan Gornji Varos 131 +385 (0)35 374 192
Peakovic Karlo Gornji Varos 20 +385 (0)35 374 249
Peakovic Martin-Antun Gornji Varos 54 +385 (0)35 374 282

Hope this helps, for starters

...Persche

Posted by: Henry Persche on September 8, 2000

Hello!

Can you tell me if the name Persche can have been Croatian?.
I have traced my family back to Gottschee, in the old Austro-Hungarian Empire, to a village called Skrill. This village is not far from the Croatian border and the town of Severin. They tell me there is a village called Perche nearby.
I ask you because you seem to be the expert on Croatia. I got your address on the WWWBoard. Hope to hear from you.

Thanks! Henry Persche

...Petrich

Posted by: Pat Petrich Ashburn on April 2, 2003 - Query for help

Name: Giovanius (John/Jean) Petrich; Joseph Petrich
Location: Adriatic area

Am searching for the homeland of my ancestor, John Petrich and Joseph Petrich who could be his brother, father or other relative.

They appeared on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi (formerly Louisiana) in the 1840s. John was a ship's carpenter and owned a schooner in Bay St. Louis, MS. He married a French woman and they had 3 children. He died in 1853 probably during the bad yellow fever epidemic. He was 40 years old in the 1850 census and he stated that he came from Italy.

I have been told that Petrich/Petric is Croatian and because of his profession I am assuming that he came from a town on the Sea. The family lore has said that he was Austrian.
