I've been told that our surname wasn't changed when
my grandpa landed at Ellis Island. I found his entry
in the ships manifest (he sailed on the Caronia, from
Cherbourg, Manche, France in 1920). I was told that
my great grandparents came over in 1913; however I can't
find any reference to Joseph Palajac |

I am certain "Panic(h)" is Croatian - check
the entries at Ellis

there might ring a bell |

Both were my maternal grandparents. Maria's maiden surname
was Pecar. Josip, (Giuseppe in Italian) immigrated to
Orebic in Dalmatia, Croatia as a young man in the late
1880's. Married a local gril, Maria, settled down and
they had seven children. He was a sculptor who worked
on many of the chruches in the Peljesac peninsula. Josip
died early in the 20th Century, and Maria came to the
US with two or her daughters after World War II. |

I have Biagio PAVLICH b. circa 1790 who sailed to Edinburgh.
There is no firm knowledge as to why he left his birth
place, Istra, but 3 different stories:-
1. He sailed to Edinburgh as Interpreter to a Count.
2. He fled his birth country when his parents wanted
him to become a priest.
3. He fled his birth country when Napoleon destroyed
the Monasteries.
